One of the very first things I notice when I walk into a cottage is the bedroom.
It doesn't matter if the kitchen is gorgeous or the living room has the perfect lake view—if the bed isn't comfortable, guests will remember that long after their vacation is over.
I've seen beautifully decorated cottages with missing pillow protectors, worn-out pillows, heavy winter comforters in the middle of July, and little details that could easily be improved. The good news is that most of these fixes are inexpensive, simple to implement, and can make a huge difference in your guests' comfort and your reviews.
Today, I'm sharing the biggest bedroom mistake I see time and time again—and how you can fix it.
Lessons From Owning My Own and Managing Cottages In My Area
After managing cottages for several years, I've noticed the same bedding mistakes over and over again. The good news? Most of them are inexpensive to fix, but they can have a huge impact on your guests' comfort, reviews, and overall experience.
When people think about upgrading their Airbnb or cottage rental, they often focus on the obvious things—new furniture, fresh paint, trendy décor, or adding a hot tub.
But after managing cottages and preparing them for hundreds of guests, I've learned that one of the most overlooked parts of any rental is also one of the most important:
The bed.
Guests might spend their days swimming, hiking, boating, or relaxing by the fire, but they spend every night in bed. If they don't sleep well, it affects their entire stay.
I've walked into beautifully decorated cottages only to find missing pillow protectors, worn-out pillows, heavy winter comforters in the middle of July, or bedding that simply isn't practical for a busy vacation rental.
The good news? Most of these problems are easy—and surprisingly affordable—to fix.
Here are the biggest bedding mistakes I see and how you can create a bedroom guests will actually rave about.
Skipping Pillow Protectors
This is probably the most common mistake I see.
Pillow protectors aren't glamorous, but they're one of the smartest investments you can make. They help protect pillows from moisture, makeup, sunscreen, hair products, and everyday wear while extending the life of your pillows.
They're also much easier to wash between guests than replacing pillows every season.
Forgetting a Mattress Protector
Mattresses are one of the biggest investments in any cottage.
Whether it's spilled coffee, wet bathing suits, children, pets, or an unexpected accident, a quality waterproof mattress protector can save you from replacing an expensive mattress.
The best part? Guests never notice it's there—but you'll be glad it is.
Using Heavy Winter Comforters All Summer
This is one I notice all the time.
Many cottages don't have central air conditioning, and even those that do can warm up after a sunny day.
A thick winter comforter might feel cozy in January, but in July it often leaves guests waking up hot and uncomfortable.
Instead, I recommend:
- Lightweight duvets
- Breathable cotton bedding
- An extra blanket folded neatly at the end of the bed for guests who prefer more warmth
Giving guests options makes a huge difference.
Not Providing Enough Pillows
Everyone sleeps differently.
Some guests like one pillow.
Others prefer two or three.
Whenever possible, I recommend providing two pillows per guest and replacing pillows that have become flat or lumpy.
Fresh, supportive pillows instantly make a bed feel more inviting.
Overlooking Breathable Bedding
Natural, breathable fabrics help guests sleep more comfortably, especially during the summer.
Cotton sheets are one of my favourites because they're soft, durable, and easy to care for between guest stays.
Comfort is always more important than fancy patterns.
Forgetting Extra Blankets
Even during the summer, every guest sleeps differently.
One person may be too warm while another wants an extra layer.
Keeping a clean throw blanket or lightweight blanket in each bedroom gives guests the flexibility to adjust without searching through closets.
It's a small touch that makes people feel cared for.
Missing the Little Details
The most memorable Airbnb bedrooms aren't always the most expensive—they're simply thoughtful.
Consider adding small touches like:
- A bedside lamp for reading
- Phone charging ports
- A small fan for warmer nights
- Extra tissues
- A luggage rack or bench
- Blackout curtains where appropriate
These details don't cost much, but they can make a guest's stay noticeably more comfortable.
