Coffee at the Cottage: How to Create the Perfect Cottage Coffee Station

From a quick morning Keurig to freshly ground beans and homemade lattes, here's how I create a coffee setup that works for everyone at the cottage.

There's something about coffee at the cottage that just tastes better. Maybe it's the fresh air, the peaceful mornings, or simply having the time to sit down and actually enjoy it.

For me, having a good coffee setup is one of those little things that makes a cottage feel like home. And if you own a cottage rental, it's also an easy way to make guests feel welcome.

But everyone likes their coffee differently.

Some people want to press a button and have coffee ready in a minute. Others love grinding fresh beans and making a proper cup. Some want an iced coffee in July, while others are dreaming about a pumpkin spice latte on a cool October morning.

That's why I think the best cottage coffee station should give people a few different options.

The Keurig: Convenient, But Not Perfect

A Keurig is one of the easiest cottage coffee makers you can have. It's fast, familiar, and lets everyone make their own cup exactly how they like it.

That's why it's such a popular choice for cottage rentals — guests walk in and already know how to use it.

Pros

  • Fast and easy
  • Guests usually know how to use it
  • Everyone can choose their own flavour
  • Minimal cleanup
  • Great when only one person wants coffee

Cons

  • Pods can get expensive
  • Disposable pods create waste
  • Coffee isn't always as fresh as freshly ground beans
  • Not ideal when making coffee for a large group

The Tried-and-True Drip Coffee Maker: Perfect for a Crowd

Sometimes you just can't beat the classic drip coffee maker.

When the cottage is full of family or friends, making everyone an individual cup of coffee can get old pretty quickly. This is where the traditional drip coffee maker with a full-size pot earns its place on the cottage counter.

Add your ground coffee, fill the reservoir, press a button and you have a full pot ready for everyone to enjoy.

This is especially handy at a cottage rental where you might have a group of guests all waking up and looking for their morning coffee at around the same time.

Why I Love a Classic Drip Coffee Maker

  • Makes multiple cups at once
  • Perfect for families and larger groups
  • Simple and familiar to use
  • Ground coffee is inexpensive and easy to find
  • You can brew a pot and keep it warm while everyone wakes up
  • Perfect for long, slow cottage breakfasts

The Downside

A full drip machine isn't always practical when only one person wants a cup of coffee. Coffee can also start losing some of its flavour if it sits on the warming plate for too long.

That's exactly why I like having a few different ways to make coffee at the cottage.

The drip coffee maker is perfect when everyone wants coffee, while the Keurig or little red pour-over is great when someone just wants a single cup.

Cottage Host Tip: If you have a drip coffee maker at your cottage rental, always keep the correct size coffee filters nearby and make them easy for guests to find. There's nothing worse than waking up ready for coffee and realizing you have the wrong filters!

A full pot for a full cottage — simple, familiar and made for a crowd.

The Little Red Pour-Over Coffee Maker

This is the simple red plastic pour-over cone that sits right on top of your mug and uses regular paper coffee filters — and I honestly think every cottage should have one.

It's inexpensive, takes up almost no room, doesn't need a complicated machine, and makes a surprisingly good cup of coffee.

How to Use a Pour-Over Cone

  1. 1Place a paper filter inside the cone.
  2. 2Add your ground coffee.
  3. 3Slowly pour hot water over the grounds.
  4. 4Let the coffee drip directly into your mug.

Cottage tip: It's also the perfect backup if your main coffee machine ever stops working.

Ground Coffee vs. Whole Beans

Ground coffee is convenient and easy, especially for cottage guests. But whole beans can give you a fresher, richer flavour when they're ground right before brewing.

Easy option

Ground Coffee

  • Convenient
  • Ready to brew
  • No extra equipment required
  • Great for guests

Coffee lover's option

Whole Beans

  • Fresher when ground just before brewing
  • Keep their flavour longer when stored properly
  • Allow you to choose the grind size
  • Great for people who really love coffee

Why a Coffee Grinder Is a Must

If you keep whole beans at the cottage, a good coffee grinder is absolutely worth having.

Different coffee styles work best with different grind sizes:

Fine

Espresso

Medium

Drip coffee

Coarse

French press

A burr grinder generally gives a much more consistent grind than a basic blade grinder — which means a better-tasting cup.
